Learn to Climb Outdoors with Confidence, Safety, and Skill
This course is perfect for climbers ready to make the leap from indoor walls to real rock. Whether you're a strong gym climber or just getting started, this course will give you the tools to climb safely and confidently outdoors.
You'll learn how to manage the unique risks of outdoor climbing, develop your judgment, and build the technical systems needed to climb independently. Courses are typically taught in Rifle Mountain Park, Colorado and the San Rafael Swell, Utah—two of the best crags for sport and trad progression.
✅ Prerequisites:
Familiarity with roped climbing systems (figure 8 knot, top rope belay, etc.)
A basic understanding of climbing gear (harness, belay device, etc.)
A good attitude and willingness to learn in an outdoor setting
🧠 What You’ll Learn
2-Day Sport Climbing Course:
Belaying the leader
Proper rope clipping technique
Cleaning a route
Top rope and sport anchor systems
Rappelling and lowering
Rope management
Equipment selection
Understanding rockfall and outdoor hazards
Knots and anchors for sport climbing
3-Day Trad Climbing Course (Add-On or Standalone):
Gear selection and placement (cams, nuts, passive pro)
Building secure anchors with natural and gear-based systems
Crack climbing fundamentals
Cleaning gear and seconding routes
Friction hitches, clove hitches, and other essential knots
Concepts of multi-pitch climbing and efficiency
Judging routes and evaluating risk at trad areas

San Rafael Swell, UT – Expansive sandstone climbing, quiet campsites, desert towers
